Liebster Award

I’m still new enough to the blogging world that I get a little giddy when someone comments on a post, retweets something I’ve said, or sends me an email. So imagine my excitement when my friend from college, Ariel Frederickson Gara of Tres Chic Arabia, bestowed the Liebster Award upon me!

I’ll be honest in saying that I wasn’t familiar with the Liebster Award, but apparently the word “liebster” is a German word for sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest and other synonyms, and it’s an award granted by bloggers to other up and coming bloggers as a way to recognize and promote their blog. How cool is that?!

The Rules:
1. List 11 facts about yourself.
2. Answer the 11 questions given to you.
3. Ask 11 new questions for the bloggers you nominate for the award.
4. Choose up to 11 up and coming blogs to nominate.
5. Go to each blogger’s page and let them know about the award.
6. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.

Before I dive in, I seriously have to thank Ariel for nominating me! Ariel and I were both public relations students in college, and spent many, many delirious hours of our senior year together on our big capstone PR client project. These days, she’s living in the United Arab Emirates (how awesome is that?!) and blogging about fashion, beauty, culture and her amazing experiences in the Arab world. Be sure to check out her blog Tres Chic Arabia!

11 Facts About Me:
  1.  I am a major morning person. I am up at 4:30 a.m. on the weekdays and 6 a.m. on the weekends. It is my personal and quiet time of the day.
  2.  I prefer salty snacks to sweet ones. Passing up chocolate is easy. Popcorn, not so much.
  3.  I grew up hunting and fishing. I still love venison, grouse, pheasant, trout, bass and all other game meats. It’s my version of childhood comfort food.
  4.  My earliest lessons of respect for animals and the environment came from my dad. An avid hunter, fisherman and gardener, he had immense respect for God’s creatures and was against practices that were inhumane or purely for sport.
  5.  I was a tomboy until I was in my teens – short hair, boys clothes, the whole bit.
  6.  I still drive the first vehicle I ever bought – a Ford Ranger 4x4 that I paid cash for when I was 19.
  7.  I am the only girl in my family. All my siblings and cousins are boys.
  8.  My nose has been broken twice and, despite three surgeries to repair it, is still messed up. I secretly want to break it again so I can just get plastic surgery to fix it once and for all.
  9.  I was a gymnast, a pole-vaulter and a cheerleader in high school.
  10.  I started running 5 years ago because, despite being an athlete my whole life, I couldn’t comfortably run 1 mile.
  11.  I love doing my taxes. I look forward to it every year.

Questions from Ariel at Tres Chic Arabia:
1.       Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because I was getting so many questions about what I was eating, buying, reading and learning through my animal-friendly transformation, that I thought it would be easier to start writing about it and sharing it more broadly.

2.       Where did you get the idea for the name of your blog?

I love alliteration and plays on words, so I started kicking around several ideas and this one just stuck. It perfectly describes my lifestyle – not animal-free, but increasingly animal-friendly.

3.       If you could have any career and succeed, and money wasn’t a consideration, what would you do?

I would turn what I do in my spare time – educating people about health and animal-friendly alternatives, fitness, working with animal welfare causes and travel – into some hybrid consulting company where I was out changing the world and spending all my time doing what I’m passionate about.

4.       What is the best beauty tip you have ever been given?

Wash your face every night and moisturize like crazy. I guess the results as to whether this is the “best” will really be evident in about 10-20 years.

5.       If you could only shop at one place for the rest of your life where would it be?

For clothes, definitely Banana Republic. As it is, I practically live at this store. For everything else, probably Target or Whole Foods.

6.       If you could spend the day with anyone alive or dead who would it be?

Two people: my dad and my little brother. I lost both way too early in life and miss them terribly. I often wish for just one more day with each of them.

7.       What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

Trashy TV and romantic comedy movies I’ve seen a billion times.

8.       Jeans and T-shirt or stilettos and cocktail dress?

Stilettos and cocktail dress. I love getting dressed up.

9.       Where is your favorite vacation spot?

Since my husband and I are avid and passionate travelers, I could never pick just one. We love something about everywhere we go on vacation. The Cinque Terre in Italy, Paris, Jamaica and Asheville, NC, are among some of my favorites.

10.   What is your favorite quote?

“To those whom much is given, much is expected.” – John F. Kennedy

11.   Who is your style icon?

Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston

My nominees and 11 questions for them:
