This Wednesday is Food Day, an annual celebration and
nationwide movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food.
If you’re unfamiliar with Food Day, it’s not just a yuppie event
promoting rich people food. It’s about improving our nation’s food policies to
help promote safer, healthier diets than the ones that are causing obesity and
killing people in our country. It’s about supporting sustainable and organic
farms. It’s about reducing hunger. It’s about reforming factory farms to
protect animals and environment. And it’s about supporting fair working
conditions for food and farm workers.
It’s an event and a movement for everyone, regardless of
income, regardless of political leanings, regardless of personal dietary choices.
More than 2,000 events are being held in communities all across the country
ranging from healthy cooking potlucks to movie screenings to cooking
demonstrations. Here in Nashville, they’re even getting kids involved by
sending 100 chefs into 100 local schools to teach kids how to prepare healthy
foods and make healthy choices.
